Young people & the outdoors
The Dutch approach outdoor education through water, dunes and cycle culture. Nivon — the national youth-hostel and nature organisation — has run affordable outdoor stays for school groups since 1946, and natuureducatie (nature education) is a formal part of the primary curriculum via groene scholen (green schools). Scouting Nederland is one of the largest youth organisations in the country, and nearly every child learns to navigate wind, tides and cycle paths before their teens.
