Young people & the outdoors

Germany practically invented modern youth outdoor education. The Wandervogel movement of the early 1900s sent teenagers hiking and camping in self-led groups, and Richard Schirrmann opened the first youth hostel in 1909 — the start of the Jugendherbergen network that still shelters school groups today. Forest kindergartens (Waldkindergärten) are now common, and most children experience a Schullandheim (school countryside retreat) before they leave primary school.
