Young people & the outdoors

France built one of Europe's earliest youth-outdoor infrastructures. The Club Alpin Français, founded in 1874, opened mountain refuges and trained generations of young mountaineers, and UCPA — created in 1965 — still runs subsidised multi-activity outdoor holidays for teenagers and students. 'Classes de découverte' (discovery weeks) are a fixture of French primary education, and Éducation à l'environnement au développement durable embeds nature learning across the national curriculum.
